Here are some of our favorite recipes for preparing your own
homemade dog foods. Most are easy to make and can be used in
place of "canned food" or fed on their own with an multi
vitamin/mineral supplement. I also add a little egg shell powder to
my recipes for calcium as well as a fatty acid supplement to each
meal and a digestive enzyme. We believe variety is important, as
well as knowing your dog's specific dietary needs before jumping
into cooking for them. If you have concerns or just need a little
coaching, we do offer
email consultations & recommendations for a small fee. We
have been "preaching" about the importance of knowing what we are
feeding our pets for several years. Purity in the pet food industry
has come under scrutiny as of late, so join us in the home-cooking
revolution and you too will see the benefits of feeding
human-edible, wholesome foods to your pets. Just a few helpful tips: 1. Keep a pot of
cooked basmati or jasmine (white) rice on hand for simple
meals 2. Try some of the pre-mixes available for
FAST meals 3. Buy meats on sale or in bulk, make BIG batches and
freeze 4. Feed a variety of fresh foods to be sure your dog is
getting all the nutrients he/she needs.
Can't cook but want the best baked kibble for your
pets? No chemicals, made with only
human-consumption ingredients.
Bone Appetit!
Holly's Holistic Hound Hash
1 pound of
meat. We use either ground lamb, lean beef, chicken, buffalo, or
canned salmon. Only one meat source per meal (we believe it
aids in digestion) 3 cups of grain and/or potato, basmati
rice, brown rice, mashed barley, oatmeal (good to combine several in
one recipe) 1/2 cup grated or finely chopped fresh GREEN veggies;
zucchini, green beans, broccoli, spinach..... feed raw or slightly
blanched 1/2 cup raw finely grated carrots Olive oil; 2
tablespoons Garlic; 1 clove mashed Parsley; 1 teaspoon (fresh
if possible) Water or broth (no-salt, natural brands-no MSG) I
use half water, half broth or make your own!
Cook grains in
broth/water and add parsley, garlic and 2 tablespoons of olive
oil. Add veggies to warm grain mix Add meat (cooked or raw,
whichever you prefer. We prefer slightly cooked and add the meat
about 5 minutes before the grain is done cooking) Freeze in
small portions and thaw as needed. This can be fed like "canned
food" mixed in with a premium kibble, or fed alone. A 20 pound
dog will eat about one cup per day. As always, each dog is an
individual and you will need to adjust accordingly. When serving
as a meal, we add a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement and 1/4
teaspoon eggshell powder per serving. (bake cleaned shells for 15
minutes at 300 degrees. Grind in coffee grinder or
blender) ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Turkey Pup-pies
Pup-pie filling: One pound of ground turkey 1 cup of Dr. Harvey's Veg-To-Bowl
(dehydrated veggies and potatoes-or chop/grate your own
veggies) 1/8 cup kelp powder 2 eggs 1/4 c brown rice
flour chicken broth to desired constancy....you want it to look
like a meatloaf mix
Crust: mix all together 1 cup brown
rice flour 1 egg 1 tbl chicken broth (or more to consistancy
of thick mashed potatoes) garlic
I use mini muffin
tins. Put the meat mix in, and top with the rice crust top! Bake 350
for 30 minutes. These can be served as a meal, or crumbled over a
healthy
kibble. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Here's a REALLY easy dinner I whip up
in about 10 minutes. Makes about 8 servings for a small
dog.
Beefy Mash One pound lean ground
beef (I use Laura's with no antibiotics/hormones) 1/4 cup
rolled oats (not instant) 1/2 cup cooked white basmati or
jasmine rice 1 can of no salt Veg-All (or one cup of
frozen mixed veggies) 1/2 cup ground flax seeds
Cook the
beef in a little water (1 cup or so) with the oatmeal til done.
Turn heat off. Add the canned veggies & rice. When cool enuf to
eat, toss in the ground flax! Awesome, fast and HEALTHY meal. Add
vitamin/mineral if fed as a meal. Can be used on top of
kibble. If fed alone, a 20 pound dog will eat about one cup per
day. Each dog is unique, so adjust
accordingly. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Woof
Loaf 3 cups lean ground meat (I use mostly ground turkey
or ground buffalo, but any lean ground meat will work) 1.5 cup
uncooked rolled oats (not the quick kind) 1/4 cup grated sweet
potato 1/4 cup grated or finely chopped green veggies (you could
use frozen spinach, grated zucchini or chopped broccoli)
1/4 cup shredded carrot 1/2 cup cottage cheese
(optional) 2 eggs parsley garlic 2 tbls olive
oil
Mix it all together and bake 350 degrees in a loaf pan
for about 40 minutes. After it cools, slice and freeze in single
servings. 20 pound dog will eat 1/2 of a 1" slice per meal. Add
multi-vitamin/mineral if fed as a
meal. _______________________________________________________________________________________________
Buffalo Burgers
I serve
these with kibble, as they are mostly meat.
1 pound
ground buffalo 1/4 c. shredded carrots chopped parsley 1
teaspoon of tomato paste 1 tablespoon parmesan cheese.
I
make about 8 little burgers and bake them on a cookie sheet til
done. You could saute them too. Break them apart and crumble over
kibble....one burger feeds all 4 of my small
dogs. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Doggie
Chili
One pound ground sirloin 1/2 can cannellini
beans, slightly mashed (white kidney beans or you could use
red...just check for added sugar) 1/2 cup white rice 2
tablespoons chopped green pepper 1/4 c. shredded cabbage and
carrots 1 cup water tiny pinch of red pepper
Brown meat
and drain. Add to remaining ingredients and cook til veggies are
soft. I give each of my small dogs about 1/4 cup as a meal
with an added multi vitamin/mineral
supplement. _________________________________________________________________________________________________
Chicken Soup
1 whole cut up fryer or Pick of the Chick (I
remove most of the skin/fat before cooking)
12 cups water
4 cups diced potatoes, sweet or white, or
a combination
1 cup shredded carrots 1 cup chopped green
veggies (zucchini, broccoli, spinach, green beans)
1 cup finely chopped celery
1 clove garlic
3 tbls olive oil
1/8 cup chopped fresh parsley
Cook (low boil) chicken in water with
garlic, celery, olive oil and parsley until meat is
done....about 30 minutes. Remove meat from the broth, let cool and
pull off of bone. While meat is cooling, add potatoes and veggies
and keep simmering on low. Add meat back into soup and cook at least
2 hours on low until done. You may add more water for "thinner"
soup.
(This can also be made in a crock pot, but I
would use boneless chicken and toss everything in the pot together
and cook overnight.)
Served over kibble or as a meal, this soup will
have your dog singing for more! Freezes
well. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

serve. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Salmon
"Pate"
1 can wild Alaskan salmon (mash well)
2 cups instant natural mashed potatoes
(prepared)-or make your own
1/4 cup canned peas
Prepare instant potatoes following instructions
on package. Add salmon and peas. You can serve this as is, or bake
in a small pie pan
until the top
browns. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sweet
